I tend to focus on one subject at time whether it's a flat or round. I use acrylics, so waiting for paint to dry isn't a factor; things go fairly fast. There are times, however, when there's more than one stick in the fire.

Interesting analogy.  For me I need to be totally committed to what I am doing or my painting suffers.  As such I tend to pick up what interests me 'that day' and thus have many partially painted figures.

With 30 mm figures which tend to come in sets this is exacerbated in that anything over 6 or so figures is going to take some time.  Given I only get to paint on weekends I do have a problem, though a wonderful one in that there is always something to paint.

My personal favorite - Western Miniatures Alice in Wonderland set is probably 65 figures which is only 1/2 - 2/3 finished over the last 6 or 7 years.  Still a nice problem to have.

It is interesting at times as well to see how my painting style has changed a bit through time as well on the same set.  I also tend to be picky and have a few figures that have faced the 'horror of paint strippers' two or three times.

(Apparently I am building a small village based on this exmaple...)

Oil paiting requires often to let paint dry for a while and reworking the shadows and highlinhts, or détails to be worked out after sufficient drying of the main colour, like free hands, or détails like on flags.  Therefore paintings several flats at a time is useful to provide this drying time, to occur without dead time.  Looking a figure in process after one week often gives new judment, defects, weaknesses that are not visible one all is done on a row.  So yes, painting 3 to 4 flats , usually two large and two 30mm size seems to be better.
More is despersing attention, as I usually "enter" in my characters, to try to give thm a personnality.  When too many are started, most will remain unfinished on the table in a corner and will never be ended !!  It would be like writing weveral books or building too many houses at the same time.

Since I do the larger scale pieces, I work on one at a time. I can't keep track of my "vision" for the piece, or what to do next, if I work on multiple pieces at once.  Like Glen, I look for the next project at about 95% complete, and I maintain an "on deck" stack of candidates for the "next" project which I shuffle from time to time. When I'm cranking, I can do about a figure  a month.

I will have to count as it a great number 40 or more.

Personally I tend to paint what grabs me at the time so I have quite a few half finished figures, though there is always something to paint.

Very occasionally I will pick up a round, some of which are 20+ years old in my stash.

I have about 12 flats on the go all 30 mm ,a few of my 1/43  motor sport figures that I sell on ebay ,and a couple of my own 30 mm ronde boss  cavalry almost finished .When I find my eye balls I will finish them .I have also been trying acrylics .Some success .Not sure I prefer the results to oils but they are near .I will post some shots later .Still not using a magnifier at 68 though I do check em over with a lens .

Well,
let me count, what I have in progress at the moment:
9 subjects with 28 figures.
Not counted the stuff I have half-painted for years.....

On my bench at present there are seven 30mm mounted figures, eleven 30mm foot figs. and two 54mm figs. All in varying degrees of progress. It wouldn't surprise me if more joined the ranks.  ;D

Since I'm not painting armies or collections, I tend to focus on one figure at a time until I reach the 90ish % complete point. Then I start looking for a new project and do the cleanup and priming.

Glad I could help with the acrylics.

I was recently discussing painting methods when my colleague said you paint 3or 4 figures at a time. This is quite correct I work on the subjects til I get to a point were I want to finish a certain subject.I am finding this is happening more and more especially as I am painting more in Acrylics.
I am blaming Glen for this desire to paint in Acrylics especially after his excellent article recently on painting 2D napoleonic ladies.
My colleague paints one figure at a time.So what do you do thats the question.
