A dark horse

Let me make a suggestion on this subject. Many moons ago I recommended a book Horse Color Explained, by Jeanette Gower. A Breeder's Perspective . It covers all the colors and patterns of horses and has lots of color pictures for those who just look at the pictures. So go down to the local Libray  and see if you can check it out or buy one Willie

Then starts the work of progressively deeping the shadows and lights untill I am satisfied

A little point of red is added at some places to color a little

I will explain here how I paint a dark horse (or let's say a dark brown horse)
There are several pictures joined to the post so you can follow the process


I used the following colors
  Basic tone : Van Dyck brown + ultramarine blur + alizarine carmine (a little) ; this gives me a very dark violet
  Lights : Ultramarine blue + alizarine carmine + white ; to obtaine a light blue violet
  Highlights : Titanium white
  Shadows : Ivory Black


As usual I cover all the figure with the basic tone; the hair and legs are in ivory black to make a difference with the body

Then I take the color off where the lights must take place

Then the light blue violet

Smooth the paint between each step
 
First shadows with ivory black

Some yellow ochre comes on the unders
