Thanks all! @Chris I use Citadel/Games Workshop paints and Vallejo for some colours, then Humbrol Matt Varnish (which is actually quite glossy even after much stirring, but it protects the figures well)
Although my technique has changed a little since, I had made a tutorial on painting flats with those acrylics a while back: http://guynemer-cigogne.blogspot.com.au/2012/02/1870-french-infantry-tutorial.html
Will make a new series of tutorials soon!

Tired of seeing them? No, that's not going to happen.
It's a nice unique style you have. Well done, I like them.  ;)

Hope people aren't too tired of my 30mm 1870 stuff? Attached is some recent work; an Algerian sharpshooter and standard French line infantryman, along with a group shot of all the flats I've painted for my 1870 collection so far (close ups of the Prussian are in the review section).
Now I'm working on some full 3D artillery pieces for flat crews. Sorry to keep it so brief, a bit tired since getting home from university (which just started this week!)  :D
