Stupid Question - 30 mm size for Mounted Figures

Beatha. I recommend  a couple of books that could help you paint the figures. The first two are The Army Gustavus Adolphus Infantry and Cavalry by Osprey. The second is European Weapons & Warfare 1618-1648 By Eduard Wagner.    First printed in 1960 and reprinted in 2015 by Winged Hussar in paper back. The first book is hard back and very large. The second one is paper back  and geared towards the wargamer but still a great book with all the illustrations from the first book. It covers every thing Willie

Adolphus funerals is a very nic and large set issued by one of the best designer engrave, Franz Karl Mohr
You will no have any problem to find pictures of the painted on the web
The l height of tin figures is measured from the base to the eyes for a foot figures

Thank you! I managed to get Mike Taylor's book a few years ago on Ebay, worth every penny. I was going to buy it in German, but I'm glad I didn't. I do a lot of airbrushing, but obviously at 30 mm, that's not happening. I'm just fascinated by Gustavus Adolphus, to the point where I'm doing the horse in 54 mm and 200 mm. I have some larger flats that I'm going to work on before the funeral procession. I mostly was interested in maybe getting it also from a collector point of view and then perhaps painting it once I've cut my teeth on some larger flats. Thanks again!

Hi there. The funeral set was actually the first set I ever painted in oils. It's not an easy set to paint in the grand scheme of things, but I loved working on it and it got me hooked on the hobby (even though my painting wasn't very good). 30mm relates to a standing figure. Those on horses of course stand higher than those on foot, but all the pieces in the set you mentioned are 30mm in scale.


Before you paint the funeral, I'd suggest you get Michael taylors book The art of the flat tin figure. It gives valuable perspective on the hobby, what's available and hints on technique.

Hi - my first post here, I've mostly painted larger pieces and not so many flats, just a few bas relief horses. Anyway, I need a reward and I keep looking at the 30 mm funeral procession of Gustavus Adolphus. I've wanted it since I saw the photos of the ones that won everywhere. Don't know if I can ever do it justice, but eventually I'd like to paint it. So, my question is whether 30 mm refers to the height of a mounted figure or standing figure. I've seen 54mm that are all over the map, so I wanted to ask. (In case anyone is interested, I've attached a picture of a horse I did a few years ago). Thanks!
