Picking up where PJ started, Reaper makes a High Density (HD) Yellow triad which I understand to be highly suited to being used as an undercoat for oils. The HD paint is applied, allowed to dry hard, the the oils are used only for shading and highlighting.

If you continue applying layers over and over (after each one dries!) the yellow will eventually become more opaque - if there is not a darker color under it. in the alternative, you can paint a layer of acrylic yellow as a base, and then paint your oils over it. This is often a problem with many transparent oil colors.

Oh yes, sorry John, that should read Transparent not Opaque!!!   senior moment I guess

Humbrol mixes well with oil paint and Sansador, by using Sansador not only is the drying time slightly longer, it also smooths  out the paint  ;)nicely.

Humbrol is an enamel, is it not? It can mix smoothly with an oil paint? Who would have thought. I find the yellows more transparent than opaque, but I'll give it a try. I also use Sansodor to thin my paints.

Hi John, yes the Winsor and Newton yellows are very very opaque and clear.

to get over the problem I mix mine with a Humbrol of the same tint and Sansador to thin it.

I also mix in Gold ochre shift gives it a nice golden shade.

I have been painting the Scheibert set of Dutch Lancers. All was going well until now when I started to paint the yellow details. Aiguilettes, shabraque trim, trim on czpska, etc. (sorry none of those items have been spelled correctly, but you know them well enough I'm sure)
The problem I am having is that the yellow (W&N Cad Yellow)will not cover. I have painted an undercoat of Polly-S yellow very earlier on.
I tried to keep the paint thick, creamy, butter-like. I have tried to thin it down with turps. All to no avail. All I am achieving is frustration.
Can anyone give me some advice please.
