Title: The last Valois again!
Post by: mike on February 04, 2013, 02:40:39 PM
Just to keep the painters of the forum company. Heres another figure from the last Valois series engraved by Otto Theim (could be a spelling error with the name!). For those who are not familiar its a set of 97 figures. I have painted about 15 so far so lots more months of painting to go.
Regards
Mike

Excellent work, lots of character.   A set on my wish list...sadly a lot tougher to find now.

Wonderful, Mike
Please paint some more !
The figures of the set are not all well designed and engraved, especially horses, but the subject is so interesting
Does anybody knows where are the moulds after the late Paul Krog ?
Eric

Thanks for looking.  As Eric says the horses in the set are a little odd being a little too long!  The scale also varies in size. Some  of the figures seem a little small for 30mm.
What I like about the set is the Character in the faces.
Heres a couple more.

The "Mignon" is very well done with typical colors of the time
You could accentuate the contrasts between shadows and highlights to try a "silk" effect

I like these as well Mike. Yes the faces are good

I must have a go at silk. Its probably best to look at the old masters for guidance.
With the lack of response regarding the availability of this set I take it that no one knows where the moulds are. It would be great if sets turned up at Kulmbach but thats probably wishful thinking.
Does anyone else have any painted examples of these figures?
And a couple more
Mike

Steve. As you can probably tell I'm steering clear of painting women at the moment. Far too difficult to handle!
The production line is still going but I think this thread has run its course for now.  Thanks again for your comments.

Hi Mike
Here are two pictures from the Valois set (part)
One has been painted by Wladimir Douchkine and one by myself
Eric

Nick. I thought all films finished short! Well they do on my recorder!
This is a massive set to paint but very enjoyable. I will put this on the back burner for now because I am half way through a different set that I want to finish off. You should step in with the Polish winged Hussar!
Eric nice painting again.  Where did the throne come frome? It's not in my set!
I'm very jealous if your the owner of the Douchkine set. That book has been an inspiration to me and certainly changed the way I paint.
If anyone else out there has any of this set please post them for us to see.
Brian. You MUST have this somewhere in your collection.
Regards
Mike

Funny you should mention the Polish Hussar.

In the middle of last Month, I had one of those moments where it just didnt look right to me.I had whitened the feathers and then decided the armour was awful, the horse was the wrong colour, and had a complete meltdown!!!!  ;D ;D ;D  so I put it under cover so it wouldnt get dusty and put it in a draw.

After doing more fairies (see workbench-- fairyboy's at it again!!!)   I decided I really must finish the Hussar, SO  after a stiff drink ;) I got it out.

After so long it was like I didnt recognise it as my own work, ( perhaps it was the drink ;D ;D ;D) and I now think it doesn't look too bad ::) so tomorrow, I'm back on it.

I think in future this is the way to go, if it dont look right, go onto something completely different and come back to it with fresh eyes ( and mind)

I will start posting it again in the Workbench section, along with my other efforts ;D

wow ...  :o :o the figure number given a face, an own character.
Next paint was well worth it ....
I think it's good that the painting of the figures does not go into zusehr detei and thereby dead are painted.
Gratlinige to impressive quality .... :-*

It does not get much better than this.  A unique set, beatifully engraved and done proudly and uniqely by several different paiinters. Stunning work all.

I have part of several Krog sets including some of his elephants. One truly hopes they will come on the market again, really beautiful work.

Mark

P.S.  i do feel sorry for Mike.  "Paint faster, show us some girls...gads man what is the hold up?"

Mike
Unfortunately I am not the owner of the Douchkine set; I would like to !
The throne is not in the set; it was engraved by Bernard Vanneau, a french creator of tin figures mainly rounds
It is available from Christian Terana

Many Thanks for you kind words Wolfgang.
Mark. I have painted more of the set but I'll leave those for another day! The figures can be turned out very quickly if you paint most of it wet on wet and dont worry about detail.  (Sorry Mike Taylor fans) I am more concerned about giving a figure shape rather than showing "all the ham in his sandwich" if you know what I mean!
Eric. I quite like the throne. I will look that one up at Kulmbach.
Well its off on holiday now!
So its "goodnight from me, and its goodnight from him"

You do seem to be able channel your 'inner dandy' via the paintbrush!  Another beautiful figure, well done.

Back to the subject in hand, another cracker as already mentioned.

OK lets get back to painting tin.
Heres a couple more from the Valois series. I've painted fifty or so but it is a big set of 97 figures. It should be finished before Knowle next year.
The castings are a little out of proportion but the overall affect of the whole set is very nice.
