Mark is right, it's quiet.....too quiet.
So here is something different, a Mars 40mm Roman that I bought with my last handful of coins right at the end of Kulmbach. My only ever figure larger than 30mm. Not finished yet, but I have tried to give it more contrast under the tutorship of the other Timson twin. Will post the finished figure soon I hope.

I can see the attraction - this really is a charming figure.
He appears to be wondering again why he joined the Roman army as a Centurion is giving him what for on his pilum technique.

Ha ha yes , he does have a slightly worried expression I have not learnt the art of painting a fierce face.
I did find it an appealing figure, there is some thing toy-like about many of the 40mm figures especially the Heinrichsen sets. You don't often see Mars figures, I thought I would bring education to the masses.
-
I have a few Mars WW1 figures in this scale. Never painted one but they are tempting!
The website is quiet. I think some members have moved to other sites.
I would hate to see the end of the BFF site so I'll make an effort (as Charles has done) to post a few pictures. The society has over 100 members (I think) so please lets keep it alive after all the hard work put in by Mark.

No not gone to another forum just not a lot to say :o have been busy rebuilding the engine on the MGF after the blow up!! roof repairs and the best friend of the family, our dog Sooty becoming ill and dying :'( with all this just nothing to say.
But well done Charles, it looks very good so maybe a few more of the bigger stuff will be on the painting table ;)
-
Hope you are having a smashing trip Eric - it has been noticeably quiet without your input.
Vietnam seems a popular vacation spot among Flat Heads - new nickname of those on this site I just made up - this year. Interestingly I don't recall a flat representing anything from this area of the world other than perhaps a Foreign Legion figure and one small set of North Vietnamese army figures that Berliner sells.
There must be a few of South East Asian history...

No way Brian, that was a one-off. Back to 30 mm for me.
-
Don't blame you!! just had a look at "my" figures and there's only a few over 30mm, not including the bikes or BFFS figures of course but can we sell them!! no chance ;D

Nice to see your Mars Figure Charles. A complete set of Romans and Germans consists of 88 figures. I do not have a complete set of them. I have just painted a few of them. Some Mars Figures sometimes appear on the Swedish auction site Tradera.

Thanks Bernt
Now I think I should have bought a few more of them, but at the time it was just an experiment to paint a larger figure. I don't think I will get all 88 though, but perhaps an opponent for my Roman.
That auction site is a new one to me, I will take a look from time to time.

Very nicely done Charles, its such a success, I think you should stick to 40 mm from now on!!! ;D ;D ;D ;D your twins done quite well, perhaps we should get him to do a figure painting lesson in the Workbench area!! ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D
I must admit when I see nicely done 30mm figures I do admire them, obviously a very well designed and engraved figure makes all the difference, but after drawing figures and downsizing them to
40mm and 30mm, the 40mm does give that little bit better definition to paint, especially when it comes to coat of arms and armour.
now you need to do a nice 40 mm Ancient Briton to go with him, then a Gaul, Frank, Greek, etc.etc. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
The finished Roman.
You are right Nick, he needs an enemy to accompany him. Anybody got one to swap?
-
Very nicely done Charles
Eric
-
I like that, very nice Charles.
-
Nice one mate. Are painting cast shadows? :)
Mike
-
looking jolly good.
I could swap for a flower fairy, but I don't think the Romans were at war with Giant fairies!!
;D ;D ;D ;D
unless you remember Up Pompeii ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks chaps. Now I look, I should make the shadow from the shield deeper and extend it to cover the left arm. Won't take long.
-
How's that?
-
The picture modify the colours but a few remarks
The shadows on the inside of the shield should cover all the inside; maybe just a very thin line of light on the lower part; it should also climbs on the knee and the leg
The nude part of the arm is too clear; it should be nearly unvisible
The light on the sleeve is not at the right place; it should be on the middle
You should try to highlight the shield a little more
Remember that in shadows (or in full light), the differences between colours tend to disappear
I am not sure to be clear enough but I hope to be helpful

Thanks Eric.
You are right about the shadow of the shield, it should have covered more of the soldier. I did increase it but not enough. I will bear in mind your other points, but you will forgive me for leaving this figure, I have so many more to paint.
My only answer is to turn it round and look at the other side!
