Title: Armies of The Blue King
Post by: mike on December 18, 2013, 03:43:42 AM
30mm figure from the series "The Blue King" by Neckel,  Engraved by L Frank. The castings I have from the General Staff are very worn but paint up well.
Its a shame Neckel doesn't have a website because they produce some superb figures, lots engraved by Frank.

Coming well Mike
I just do not understand that grey line under the hair of the horse
For your information there is an old and rare Neckel catalogue for sale on the german ebay(see link)

It was supposed to be a shadow of the plaited hair!  Its staying now.
Wouldn't mind the catalogue though

Well, I did notice it was the plait shadow  ;) ;)
But I feel it is too thin and too deep
At the end of it there should be more shadow around the pompoms
And there is also something wrong at the crossing with the rein
Just a little trick about cast shadows : try to paint them an other tone than the volume shadows of the figure

Bavaria and the Blue King do seem to be the rage these days!  This figure is beautifully painted, these are indeed wonderful figures.

I have some Grenadiers to post from this set shortly and ala Mr. Bistulfi will be doing some others representing other countries from the War of the Spanish Succession.  Very colorful time period.

The shadows of the hooves on the base is a great touch

He also has just the right look about him, one assumes it is going to be a verrrry bad day for the recruits based on his persona.

(Pretty impressive when one considers the size of this...)

Mike, I've got the Neckel catalogue if you need copies of any of the ranges I can scan them to you. Of course they have got rid of some of the ranges, I think a lot of the Napoleonics have gone to Scholtz for example.
Anyway I like your figure, despite the obvious errors!!

I also have a PDF copy of the Neckel catalog I can provide  to anyone who is interested - just message me here.

I also have emailed Herr Neckel who seems like a nice fellow to deal with as well.

Yes Mike very good, I particularly like the Cast shadow you have added to the background.

As you do want me to say something :
The cast shadow of the sword appears on the saddle clothe; it is missing on the man's red coat

True, but the sword is right up against the red coat, so it would be a darker line right at the sword and it would follow the contours of the coat wrinkles. Also, might the shadow on the saddle cloth be curved some since the the cloth is draped over the horses back and falls away? The shadow would start straight, then curve a bit downward and become more diffuse as the sword moves further away from the cloth.

See? I do pay attention... ;D

Hi Mark, would you please send me PDF version of MR. Neckel catalogue. I have a hard copy made about 30 years ago and it's not sharp enough. Thanks beforehand. Oleg, Toronto
